Summary of Case

In the morning of June 14th Alarmphone was called by a group of travellers, among them eight women, 20 children and 52 men, in a boat in distress in Maltese SAR. At the time of the distress call people related one person had fallen unconscious and the engine had broken down. We forwarded the alert to authorities at 09.59 CEST. Throughout the morning a relative informed us of updated GPS positions which we related to authorities. We lost contact to the boat at 14.47 CEST; in the evening of the same day the relative informed us the people had been rescued to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
