Summary of Case

In the morning of May 17th we were called by three people in a kayak in distress in the Straight of Gibraltar. They related a GPS position and informed us they were struggling with heavy currents. We forwarded this information to the Spanish Search and Rescue organization Salvamento Marítimo (SM) Tarifa at 06.25 CEST. At 08.46 CEST, the same authority informed us of the rescue of three people in a kayak close to Tarifa who were brought to Algeciras.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
