Summary of the Case: In the morning of Friday the 15th of May, the Alarm Phone shift team received a call from Morocco, informing us about a vessel in distress in Spanish waters, near Tarifa, with 8 passengers on board (1 woman, 7 men). The vessel had left Tanger in the early hours of the day but had entered an emergency situation with water entering their vessel. The shift team immediately informed the Spanish rescue agency Salvamento Maritimo in Tarifa, passing on the gathered information. In a phone conversation with Salvamento Maritimo about 1 hour later, they confirmed the rescue of the vessel and the well-being of all 8 passengers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
