Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 11th of February 2019

Case name: 2019_02_11-WM375
Situation: Alarm Phone alerted to emergency situations in the Western Med
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Cases: On Monday the 11th of February 2019, at 9.09am CET, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a contact person to a boat carrying 4 people who had left Achakar/Morocco at 5am local time and were rowing toward Spain. We repeatedly tried to reach the travellers but initially we were not able to get through to them. Eventually, around 11am, we were able to get through to them and they told us that they could see a helicopter of the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo (SM). They could also see a vessel approach them. Already half an hour later, the people confirmed that they were intercepted and returned to mainland Morocco by the Moroccan Navy.
