Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 27th of June 2018Case name: 2018_06_27-WM271
Situation: Alarm Phone alerted to emergency situations in the Western Med
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the Cases: On Wednesday the 27th of June 2018, the Alarm Phone was alerted to two emergency situations in the Western Mediterranean Sea. At 2.23am CEST we received the information from a contact person that a boat had left from Cap Spartel/Morocco a few hours earlier, carrying 12 people, including 1 woman. For several hours we tried to support them but then lost contact. Only in the afternoon did one of the travellers confirm that they had been intercepted by the Moroccan Navy and returned to Morocco. At 5.32am a contact person informed us about a second boat, this time carrying 13 people, including 3 women, also from Cap Spartel. At 7.25am we received a GPS position from the boat. At 7.51am we were informed that two of them were pregnant. We spoke to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo (SM) at 8.02am. Only in the afternoon were we able to speak to the travellers directly again. They informed us that they had been intercepted by the Moroccan Navy and were back in Morocco.
