Summary of the Cases: On Saturday the 16th of January 2016, at 1.20am, a contact person told us via WhatsApp about a vessel carrying 45 people and moving toward the Greek island of Pserimos. They were still in Turkish waters. We could not reach them and our contact person had already alerted the Turkish coastguards as the vessel seemed in urgent distress. At 3am our contact person informed us that the Turkish coastguards had confirmed its rescue.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
