Summary of the Case:

On Saturday, 20th of July at 10:29am CEST our shift team was alerted to a group of 17 travelers, among them 4 women and 1 baby, in distress south of Symi Island in Turkish territorial waters. They informed us that their engine had broken, and the boat had started to sink. They urgently needed rescue and had already alerted the Coast Guards. At 10:50am they informed us that the Turkish Coast Guard had arrived on scene.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
