Summary of the case: On Monday the 26th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of three travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Annaba on the 22nd of July at around midnight. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their exact GPS position. However, we immediately alerted both the Spanish and Italian search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We had no contact of the travellers and the competent search and rescue authorities also refused to give us any information. We were therefore forced to close the case without knowing what happened to the three travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
