Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 13th October 2024 Case name: 2024_10_13-WM028 Situation: 12 travellers in distress in the Western Med, rescued to Motril by Salvamento Maritimo. Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Summary of the case: On Sunday the 13th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 12 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima, heading towards Motril. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and had arrived to Motril.

13/10: 159 travellers rescued to El Hierro

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean Summary of the case: On Sunday the 13th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 159 travellers, including 11 women and several children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Niodior, Senegal, and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We did not have a phone number of the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to El Hierro. This was afterwards confirmed by the relative.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Summary of the case: On Saturday the 12th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers, including at least one minor, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. We were not able to reach the travellers but received their GPS position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We later learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.

08/10: 26 travellers rescued to Cadiz

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 8th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 26 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Rabat on a rubber boat on the 4th of October. They were heading towards Cadiz. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued and were all safe.

08/10: 25 travellers rescued to Lanzarote

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 8th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 25 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan more than 24 hours earlier, heading towards Lanzarote. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote. Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that all the travellers were alright.

02/10: 11 people missing in the Western Med, three survivors

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 2nd of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 14 travellers, all men, three of them minors, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tipaza, Algeria, the morning before on a small plastic boat, heading towards Ibiza. Neither we nor the relative were able to reach the travellers. For many days we were unable to figure out what happened to the boat. Eventually, we learned that the boat had been found between Menorca and Sardegna. Onboard were three survivors. The other 11 people remain missing. All our thoughts and solidarity are with the friends and families of those missing, as well as with the survivors who had to endure this traumatising experience. The travellers had left from Akhfenir in the early morning of the 27th of September on a blue rubber boat. We did not manage to get their GPS position but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We later learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote.

28/09: Group of travellers probably intercepted by the Moroccan navy in the Atlantic

The travellers had left from Tan Tan on the 22nd of September. We had very little information about the boat and were not able to reach the travellers. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had most likely been intercepted by the Moroccan navy. As we had very little information about the boat, it was not possible for us to confirm this information with the Moroccan rescue authorities.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean Summary of the case: On Friday the 27th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 48 travellers, including five women and a baby, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan in the evening of the 25th of September on a white rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We later managed to reach the travellers. They told us that they had no food and drinking water, that they had run out of fuel and that the weather conditions were getting worse with water entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and passed on all the information to Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed updates to Salvamento Maritimo as often as possible. As time passed, we could hear on the phone that the situation deteriorated and that the panic onboard increased. They told us that a pregnant woman onboard was in a critical health condition. We reached out to companies of merchant vessels in the area to try to mobilize the assistance needed. Later, we learned that the travellers had been picked up by the Moroccan navy and returned. 24/09: Shipwreck in the Atlantic, only four survivors

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 24th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 61 travellers, including 15 women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan in the early morning on the 22nd of September on a rubber boat. We were not able to reach the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from a survivor that the boat had shipwrecked. To our knowledge, four travellers survived the shipwreck. Two of them were transferred directly to the hospital in Laayoune. The other travellers remain missing. All our thoughts and solidarity are with the families and friends who are now stuck in limbo with no clarity about their loved ones, as well as with the survivors who had to endure this traumatic experience.

23/09: 48 travellers rescued to Fuerteventura

We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. The following day we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Spain.

From a relative we got a GPS position of the boat and we then immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and returned to Tan Tan.

The travellers had left from around Algiers in the early hours of the morning the day before. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Both we and the relative continued attempting to reach the boat for days without success. We also remained in contact with the authorities who were unable to confirm whether the travellers had been rescued or not. After almost a week we learned that the travellers had been brought back to Algeria after spending seven days drifting at sea as their engine had broken.
